Thomas Hartless was a 43-year-old who lived in Utica, Ohio where he lived with his parents on and off. ^[6]Hartless met his ex-girlfriend, Marlina Medrano, in 2009 in Newark, OH and they have had a tumultuous on and off relationship. ^[3]

Hartless has a criminal history dating back to 1992 where records show he has an assault conviction.

^[2]In 2010, Hartless was sentenced to 15 months in prison after pleading to guilty to charges of aggravated menacing and aggravated assault.

^[1]In the case, his ex-girlfriend said that he beat and choked her.

^[2]Initially, he faced Kidnapping and felonious assault charges. ^[1]Also, he has a Drunk Driving conviction. ^[5]

Recently, Hartless was released from Licking County Jail after being charged with domestic violence and criminal damaging/endangering.

^[2]After Hartless was released, a neighbor posted on Facebook warning residents about Hartless being in the area and said that "I am in grave fear for my life and that of my daughter...Please take action to protect yourselves and your families because you can't count on the Licking County Sheriff's Department, the Utica Police Department, or the Licking County Judicial system to look out for you." ^[9]

On the morning of May 12th, Police received a call about a man with a gun near the Pine Kirk Care Center, a hospice in Kirkersville, Ohio. Police chief Steven DiSario and other officers rresponded to the scene. DiSario's last transmission was that he had the subject in sight. Hartless shot at DiSario in an alley, killing him. Hartless then entered the facility where his ex-girlfriend Marlina worked and fatally shot her and her co-worker Cindy Krantz. ^[5]Hartless then turned the gun on himself and pulled the trigger, resulting in his death. Police are investigating the incident. ^[6]
