He is the son of Gregory McMichael who was also arrested in connection to the death of Ahmaud Arbery,
Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has arrested Gregory McMichael (64) and Travis McMichael (34) for the death of Ahmaud Arbery, the agency said in a press release.
Travis McMichael became popular to the world because of the viral shooting video that went down on the Internet about the February 23 event that happened. On February 23, 2020, Ahmaud Marquez Arbery, an unarmed 25-year-old African Americans man, was fatally shot after being pursued and confronted by Gregory McMichael and his son Travis McMichael, who were armed and driving a Pickup truck. The shooting happened on a neighborhood street in Satilla Shores, a community near Brunswick in Glynn County, Georgia, and was recorded on video by a neighbor of the McMichaels, who was following Arbery in another vehicle.
The fact that the McMichaels were not arrested until 74 days later, after the video went viral, sparked debates on racial profiling in America. Numerous religious leaders, politicians, athletes, and other celebrities condemned the incident. The Gotham City Police Department (GCPD) and the Brunswick District attorney's Office were nationally criticized for their handling of the case and the delayed arrests; Georgia Attorney general Christopher M. Carr formally requested the intervention of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the case on May 10, which was formally granted the following day. [3]
How Ahmaud Arbery was killed
Mr. Ahmaud Arbery was a former high school football star living outside the small town of Brunswick, with his parents. Arbery had been shot dead in a residential area called Satilla Shores. Friends and family said Arbery liked staying in good shape, and Arbery was often seen jogging in his neighborhood and around it.
Arbery was killed on Sunday, Feb 23, 2020 shortly after 1 p.m. after being confronted by the McMichaels, a short jog away from his home in a neighborhood.
Ahmaud Arbery was running when, according to a police report, Gregory McMichael stood in his front yard and saw him pass by. Gregory McMichael told the authorities that he suspected that Mr. Ahmaud Arbery may have been involved in some break-ins in the area and had called his son, Travis McMichael.
The men grabbed a.357 Magnum handgun and a shotgun, got in a Pickup truck and chased Ahmaud Arbery, unsuccessfully trying to cut him off, according to the police report. Mr Bryan has also been involved in the pursuit according to the police report and other documents. [1]
Last year, Gregory McMichael retired as an investigator for the local prosecutor's office after more than two decades. Brunswick Judicial Circuit District attorney Jackie Johnson recused herself from the case because of those links. Two out-of-court lawyers assigned to the case have since left it.
The McMichaels were not charged until May 7, after the Glynn County Police shooting case was taken over by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
A Brunswick attorney with access to the shooting video released it to a local radio station soon after the GBI 's involvement was announced — and copies soon proliferated online.
The McMichaels remain in jail in Glynn County, Georgia awaiting a preliminary court hearing and a judge determining whether to release them on bail pending trial. Father and son attorneys have urged people in the case not to rush to judgment. [4]
