On December 7, 2017, Fernandez was one of two victims killed in the Aztec High School Shooting. ^{[2] [7]}After friends and family identified Fernandez as a victim, they paid tribute to him on social media. ^{[4] [10]}

Police officers had to shoot through a locked door to enter the school.

They found the suspected shooter dead, with a 9mm pistol and multiple loaded magazines were found near him. ^{[10] [6]}

Authorities have not released the shooter’s identity, but they stated he is a man.

They would not confirm whether or not he was a student or if there was a motive.
