Mega Match

Mega Match

Mega Match [1] (originally known as Mega Match Sensational from 1996 to 2000 and then Mega Match Siglo XXI from 2002 to 2006) is a game show broadcast and produced by Venezuelan network Venevisión from 1996 to 2006.

Format

The dynamics of the program consists of two institutions represented by two colors (Yellow and Green), competing in different tests not for points, but for minutes, at the end they were facing each other in "Cuidado con la torta" (Beware of the Cake) which consists of the teams being asked several questions, the one who answers correctly slaps the participant of the opposite team in the face and the seconds go to his team, if he answers incorrectly, he goes ahead, answers when it is not his turn, rings the bell without answering or his team blows, he gets a slap, and the seconds go to the opposite team.

If neither team answers the question after the timeout, both teams are double-struck and the seconds go to neither team.

The team that accumulates the most minutes goes to the "Súper Millonaria Casa de los Premios" (Super Millionaire House of Prizes), where, with the minutes accumulated, they use them to be able to open all the doors with a bunch of keys.

If they manage to open all the doors, they get great prizes, including a Car and a Motorcycle.

In total there are between 20 and 30 million Bolívares (old) in all the prizes.

From 2002 to 2006, the idea of bringing celebrities to "Padrinos" their teams was implemented (This same idea is implemented from the Spanish TV contest, "El Grand Prix del Verano" (The Summer Grand Prix), they were known as "Los Padrinos Famosos" (The Famous Sponsors), who also helped their teams to get as many minutes as possible to go to "La Casa de los Premios" (The House of Prizes).

The padrinos, were many times famous stars of the Venevision channel, other times, they were recognized stars of Venezuela.

Since 2004 the "Megateca" was implemented, where the games were stopped so that the institutions could enjoy, sing and dance with great artists from Latin America who were invited to the program.

Some of them were Calle 13, Héctor & Tito, La Factoría Jerry Rivera, Scarlett Linares, Los Adolescentes Orchestra, Zona 7, among others.

In this program there was also a special edition in which 2 military brigades were invited, therefore special gymkhanas were made for them.

History

Beginnings of the show (1996-1997)

In 1996, the "Mega Match Sensational" segment premiered on Súper Sábado Sensacional, where Daniel Sarcos was opening as an animator on Venevision, and on other occasions he animated with Gilberto Correa (who was the animator of Súper Sábado Sensacional[3] at the time). From this beginning, the institutions were represented by the colors Yellow and Red.

In 1997, Daniel Sarcos started animating Súper Sábado sensacional due to the departure of Gilberto Correa from Venevisión. At that time, Samir Bazzi, Jorge Aravena and Rashel Rodríguez enter as animators of the program, along with Daniel Sarcos.

Cycle Mega Match 2000 (1999)

In March 1999, the program renewed its format and was restricted under the name "Mega Match 2000".

The great novelty that the program had in this new cycle was that for the first time a contest program in Venezuela was going to distribute more than 30 million bolivars in prizes.

Cycle Mega Match Milenium (2000)

In 2000, the program changed its name to "Mega Match Milenium", in reference to the arrival of the new millennium.

It had slight modifications with respect to the scenery, but new games were added such as The Bullring and The Dictionary, where the minutes went up or down for the schools.

The house of prizes added a special station: if the winning school passed all the stations including the one for the car, they went to the suspense of the Skyscraper (the same one used years later in The War of the Sexes), where if it reached the 12 floors it had with any of the keys, the winning school could take away two kilos of gold.

This cycle lasted until the month of August, since in September they started the War of the Sexes and with the success that it had, it was kept on Super Sabado Sensacional, making the Mega Match stop broadcasting for the rest of that year and during 2001.

Cycle as an Independent Show (2002-2006)

At the end of 2001, after the program was not broadcast during that year, Venevision would announce the return of the Mega Match but as an independent program, that is, out of Super Saturday sensational.

Finally in 2002, the program returned under the name "Mega Match Siglo XXI", premiering in Primetime on Thursdays at 19:00 hrs.

(Sometimes the schedule changed to 20:00).

Luis Gerónimo Abreu and Rashel Rodríguez were already in the animation, the big surprise was the appearance as animator of Chiquinquirá Delgado3 together with Samir Bazzi and Daniel Somaroó. The program in that year obtained an acceptable score of 8 points in terms of tuning.

In 2005, Chiquinquirá Delgado went on to present the morning Portada's, leaving the Mega Match and in her replacement came Waleska Castrillo. For that year "The great house of prizes" was modified and was called "The enchanted castle of the traffic lights". It consisted of a traffic light and a button at the end of each station. If the button was pressed, the prize of the station was lost; if it was yellow, the prize was kept, but if the light was green, the prize of the station was doubled. This idea was only maintained during that year since for the year 2006 until the end of the program it was modified again and it was called "The enchanted house of the swimming pool" It was a little similar to the previous idea of the "Castle of the traffic lights", but the great difference was that a swimming pool of balls was placed and between the balls there were some "yews" of colors Red, Yellow and Green. The idea was that at the end of each season the winning school participant should run to the pool and find a yew, if a Red yew came out he lost the prize, if it was Yellow he kept it, and if it came out Green he doubled it. In this last stage of the Mega Match, Waleska Castrillo, Samir Bazzi and Daniel Enrique Romero were in the animation.

By mid 2006,María Fernanda León replaced Waleska Castrillo because the latter was pregnant and for that reason she had to leave the program to have her first child.

End of the Show

In 2007, it was decided to restructure the program, which also led to the cancellation of La Guerra de los Sexos (TV show) (The War of the Sexes) in 2006 to make the restructuring possible, where the dynamics of the program was totally changed. It was re-launched as "El Gran Navegante" (The Great Navigator), changing all its dynamics, its animators were Daniel Sarcos and Samir Bazzi.

The program ended in 2009 as it did not give good results in terms of ratings, besides this the Venezuelan audience was crying out for the return of La Guerra de los Sexos.

This program returned as a segment of Super Sábado sensacional and later became an independent program.
