Joseph Gus Fitzgerald is a former Harrisonburg, Virginia mayor, city council member, and Democrat Party activist. [1]
Personal Life & Career
He works as technology coordinator for James Madison University. A prominent Democrat, he organized HarrisonburgVOTES, the organization that employed Andrew Spieles and submitted registrations for 19 dead voters. Fitzgerald is 6th District Democratic Committee Chairman. [1]
Fitzgerald is married to Deb Stevens Fitzgerald who he met during the 2002 City Council election.
She is chair of VA Democrats.
She is also running in the November 2016 election for a Harrisonburg School Board position.
Fitzgerald is quoted in a book on Political ethics, Understanding Ethical Failures in Leaders by Terry Proce, as saying that as mayor, free travel for his spouse was about the only benefit besides a free parking space.
Fitzgerald was appointed to the Board of Trustees of the Frontier Culture Museum of Virginia by former Democrat National Committee chair and current Virginia governor Terry McAuliffe. Fitzgerald donates to various Democrat politicians and to what appears to be a political group supporting Democrat City council candidates in Harrisonburg, Common Sense for the valley. Fitzgerald has been a member of the 6th Congressional District Democratic Committee and was its Chair.
Fitzgerald and his wife called for Harrisonburg mayor Chris Jones to resign from office over back taxes.
