Brandon Vandenburg is a convicted rapist and is a top tight end, college football player in Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.
Gang Rape
Brandon Vandenburg gang raped his then girlfriend with his three Vanderbilt football teammates, Cory Batey, Brandon Banks and Jaborian "Tip" McKenzie in June 2013. The gang rape took place on campus in Vanderburg's dorm room in the Gilette Dorm at Vanderbilt.
On November 4, 2016 Brandon Vandenburg was sentenced to 17 years in jail after being found guilty of five counts of aggravated rape, two counts of aggravated sexual battery and unlawful photography.
After being sentenced, Brandon was taken to Bledsoe County Correctional Complex for intake and an assessment, at the facility it will be decided where he serves out his sentence.
Vandenburg was the ringleader of the gang rape [1].
He was in control and passed out condoms to the other rapists, according to McKenzie [1].
Vandenburg also slapped the victim to ensure she was unconscious before raping her [1].
Vandenburg also told McKenzie that they could beat the rape charges by flushing the condoms in the toilet, since he knew a friend who had gotten away with rape by flushing condoms.
In June 2015, Vandenburg was charged and convicted of aggravated rape, attempted aggravated rape and aggravated sexual battery charges.
He was also charged and convicted of Vandenburg of one count of tampering with evidence and one count of unlawful photography.
Judge Monte Watkins declared a mistrial and set aside the convictions because one of the jurors had failed to disclose that he himself had been a victim of rape.
Brandon Vandenburg was tried again in June 2016 and was found guilty on all the counts he was facing on June 18, 2016.
He now faces a sentence of 15-25 years in prison like his teammate Cory Batey.
A source close to one of the defendants said that Vanderbilt coach James Franklin tried to cover up the rape and told a player to delete a video from the gang rape after the player showed it to Franklin.
An attorney involved in the case said that the videos taken during the gang rape were racially charged.
Vandenburg and the victim were white while the rest of the defendants in the rape were black.
Chris Boyd, another Vanderbilt teammate helped cover up the crime and entered a conditional guilty plea to a misdemeanor accessory charge, getting 11 months and 29 days of probation. He was dismissed from the football team however he is still a student at Vanderbilt University.
Vandenburg sent photos and videos of the gang rape to friends Joseph Quinzio and Miles Finley.
The two men tried to delete the photos and videos by smashing their phones and deleting the messaging program used off their computer.
After the video was found both were charged with a felony count of tampering with evidence in the case and were offered plea agreements and about one year of probation in exchange for their testimony.
Mack Prioleau was Brandon Vandenburg's former roommate.
He was sleeping and awoke during the gang rape.
He admitted that he didn't do anything to stop the gang rape once he woke up.
He was the only person other than the victim who was not charged in the gang rape.
College Football Career
Vandenburg was originally from Palm Desert, California.
He previously attended College of the Desert and transferred to Vanderbilt and signed with signed with the team on January 19, 2013.
He played tight end for the school's team, the Vanderbilt Commodores, and was called the top junior college tight end in the United States by ESPN. ESPN ranked Vandenburg as the 12th best junior college football player in the country in their 2013 ESPN Junior College 100 list.
