Abdul Razak Artan was an 18-Year-old student at Ohio State University. Artan was a student of Logistics Management. He was a refugee from Somalia who fled to Pakistan in 2007 and came to the U.S. in 2014. He was involved in a horrific attack on campus November 28, 2016.
Refugee Status
Abdul Artan is a refugee from Somalia and has permanent residency status in the U.S.. He fled his home country of Somalia in 2007 and made his way to Pakistan before moving to the United States in 2014.
While at school, Artan publically complained about Islamophobia on campus and the lack of places for Muslims to pray.
On November 28, 2016 at around 10 a.m., the fire alarm went off at Watts Hall causing students to evacuate the building.
While students and faculty were waiting outside the building for further instructions, Artan purposely hopped a curb with his silver vehicle and ran into several people.
At first people thought it was an accident until he exited the vehicle and attacked several students with a butcher knife.
Artan was shot and killed by Ohio State Universitt Police Officer Alan Horujko within a minute of the attack developing.
Nine people have been sent to different hospitals in the Columbus area in the wake of the incident, including one who is in critical condition. The other eight are expected to make full recoveries.
Amid the chaos, students were instructed by the Campus's Emergency Management to Run Hide Fight. The campus lockdown was lifted at 11:30am.
The motive of the attack is unknown, but due to the complexity of the attack, officials believe that Abdul Artan's actions were deliberate and planned in advanced.
