Thomas Lane (Police Officer)

Thomas Lane (Police Officer) is a former American police officer who served the Minneapolis Police Department. He gained international media attention in June 2020, after he was arrested and charged in the death of George Floyd. Former officers Derek Chauvin (Police Officer), Tou Thao, and Alexander Kueng (Police Officer) were also arrested and charged. [1] [2] [3]

Education &Career

Lane graduated from the University of Minnesota. He joined the police force early in 2019, at the age of 35 as a cadet. Lane had no complaints in his file during his short time on the force. [2]

On employment forms, he stated he done volunteer work tutoring Somali youth and as a mentor helping at-risk elementary school students with reading and homework. [2]

Death of George Floyd

Charges

In cellphone video of the May 25, 2020 arrest of George Floyd, Officer Chauvin is shown pressing his knee onto Floyd's neck for more than eight minutes while Floyd cries out "I can't breathe" and eventually stops moving.

Thomas Lane, Tou Thao and Alexander Kueng are each facing charges of unintentional aiding and abetting second-degree murder as well as aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter. They are all currently being held at Hennepin County Jail. Chauvin is being held at Oak Park Heights Correctional Facility, facing second-degree and third-degree murder, as well as second-degree manslaughter charges in the incident. All four officers have bail set at $1 million each. [1]
