Stephen Collinson graduated from Simon Balle School in 1989 with a Master of Arts in English language and literature. He then attended the University of Aberdeen, where he received an MA in English.

Stephen Collinson began his Career in Journalism at DC Thomson where he was a reporter from September 1995 to March 1997. He then joined Swiss Satellite Radio as a producer and reporter from July 1995 to April 1997.

In March 1997, Stephen Collinson joined the Agence France-Presse starting out as a news editor. He left to work at CNN in October 2014.
