Sruthi grew up in the South India in the state of Kerala and developed an appreciation of the culture, food, and fashion of where she was raised. [2] At 11-years-old, Sruthi moved to the United States when her mother found a better opportunity as a registered nurse. [1] When she first settled in California, Sruthi faced discrimination and bullying due to her continuing to dress in the same manner as she did back in India. [1] Ashamed, she began to assimilate into culture of the United States and it was not until college that she began to embrace her traditional roots again. [1] She began posting pictures of herself wearing traditional clothing in India and accessories like the Bindi and the Nath Nose Ring. [1] One Twitter post in particular captioned "People: "what's with the dot" "what's that on your nose" "maybe you should tone down all this cultural stuff" Me:" with two accompanying pictures received over 21,000 retweets and 74,000 likes. [4] Sruthi runs the blog Silk and Champagne, which focuses on style, fashion, art, poetry, individuality, and aesthetics. [2]
Education
Sruthi attended the University of Houston from 2012-2015 and was a part of several organizations on campus including Alpha Epsilon Delta, the American Medical Student Association, and Dhun A Cappella. [16] During her time there, she worked as a Lab Assistant and was a Campus Representative for The Princeton Review. [16] In 2015, Sruthi transferred to the University of Texas at Dallas and earned her degree in Supply Chain Management from the Naveen Jindal School of Management with a 4.0 GPA. [16]
