Shirley Hung (Shirley Henry) schooled at Boston University with Bachelor of Science in Journalism and Bachelor of Arts in International Relations. In 1998, she received a Master's in Public Policy from Georgetown University.^[4]

In 2005, Shirley became an Executive Producer of the America Bureau at CNN. From 2008-2011, she was a Coverage Manager, supervising all aspects of CNN Washington's newsgathering on the weekends. In 2013, she became a Supervising Producer of National Security. Hung managed CNN's Washington-based National Security unit, covering the Pentagon, Department of State, intelligence, terrorism and other issues related to national security. She also aupervised CNN's Security Clearance blog.^[4]

In September 2014, Hung joined NPR as a Senior Editor of Washington Desk. From 2015-2019, she worked as a Deputy Washington Editor. Since June 2019, Hung has been a Chief Washington Editor at NPR.^[4]
