On Saturday February 17, 2018, Thornton ordered food using the UberEATS app. As he was walking away from the driver around at 11:30 p.m., words were exchanged between the two. ^{[2] [1]}

The driver allegedly fired several shots, striking Thornton several times. The driver fled the scene in a white Volkswagen. At the time, police have not made any arrests. ^{[2] [1]}

Thornton was taken to Grady Hospital in critical condition and later died. ^{[2] [1]}On Monday February 19, 2018, Robert Bivines turned himself into authorities on a murder charge. ^[2]
