Roy Oliver (Police Officer)
Roy Oliver (born February 6, 1984) is a former police officer for the Balch Springs Police Department. [5]He was with the department starting in 2011 but was fired due to the fatal shooting of Jordan Edwards. [6]
Death of Jordan Edwards
Jordan Edwards
On the evening of April 29, 2017, a large party was taking place in Balch Springs, Texas. Police responded to the scene. When they arrived, gunfire went off and a vehicle caught their attention. Oliver then shot his rifle at the vehicle, shooting Jordan Edwards in the head. Edwards later died from his injuries. [5]
Although it was first reported that the vehicle was "aggressively backing towards the police officer's vehicle," the body cam footage contradicted Oliver's account.
Correcting his original statement, the Chief of Police said *"I unintentionally, incorrect yesterday when I said the vehicle was backing down the road.
In fact, according to the video that I viewed the vehicle was moving forward as the officer was approached."* At first, Oliver was just put on leave, but since has been terminated from his position.
He has a limited amount of time to appeal his termination.
Firing
On May 2, 2017, Officer Oliver was fired from the Balch Springs Police Department for violating department policies.
