Jonathan DeGuzman was an officer and 16 year veteran of the San Diego Police Department.
[0]In 2003, he was given the purple heart after he was stabbed during a traffic stop.
[17]He was loved by his community, including the elementary school where he would frequently visit to spend time with kids and teach them about law enforcement.
Death
DeGuzman was fatally shot around 11 p.m. on 7/28/2016 after stopping an individual in the 3700 block of Acacia Grove Way, in the city's Southcrest section.
[3] [0]Deguzman was a part of the gang-suppression unit that patrols areas of gang related crimes.
For hours the SDPD ordered residents to stay in their homes throughout the night as heavily armed officers of varying law enforcement agencies scoured vicinities, alleys, homes, and other areas for possible suspects - helicopters flew above the locality.
Jesse Gomez, 52, was arrested and is in critical condition from a gunshot wound.
A second suspect, Marcos Antonio Cassani, 41, was also apprehended and arrested on an unrelated outstanding warrant - police are investigating whether he was involved in the shooting.
