Phoenix Raei is an Australian actor, writer and director born in Shiraz who immigrated to Perth, Australia as a child. Who is one of the founder of Little Fish Films alongside his partner Kate Lister[1]. The actor will also appears on upcoming Netflix web series 'Clickbait'.
Biography
Phoenix Raei was born in Shiraz, Iran but later moved Australia when he was a kid. He doesn't play with toys, instead he would set out characters and making film from it since he was at the age of 12. Even after doing this, it never come to his mind that he would make film.
Being from a Persian family makes studies of higher priority and this led him to study law in the university. Making film came to his mind when he was halfway through with studying law and felt like getting further away with adulthood . He made the switch knowing fully well that he have to go hard or go home.
His acting took him out of Perth and to Melbourne, where his family later followed.
“I got a scholarship to Melbourne and moved there about two years ago,’ he said.
“I studied there for a year before I got (a role in) Australia Day.
“My family followed me a couple of months ago and I told them ‘don’t come here and say you don’t like the weather’.”
Career
His breakthrough role came in Kriv Stenders' Australia Day (2017) starring next to Bryan Brown, Daniel Webber and Sean Keenan.
Phoenix was praised by audiences for his performance as Yaghoub Ghaznavi, a small-time drug dealer who feels the pressure from his family to take action when his brother is violently assaulted.
In 2019, he was the recipient of the Casting Guild of Australia, Rising Star Award. He also landed roles in Mustangs FC, Romper Stomper and Wentworth. Raei plays Ash, who lives with his uncle Hamid (Amir Rahimzadeh) and his brother Kam (Yazeed Daher) in a social housing tower in the 30-episode serial produced by Matchbox Pictures and For Pete’s Sake Productions. Co-created by Warren Clarke and Que Minh Luu and set in the fictional inner-city neighbourhood of Arcadia Heights, the drama explores the relationships between the tower’s residents and those who live in the adjoining, rapidly gentrifying community. Ash is being raised by his uncle after his parents died in Iran. “Ash is going through an identity crisis, trying to figure out who he is and where he belongs,”
Raei tells IF.
“There is a lot of conflict but [15] the show is funnier than I expected.”
He was cast as a lead in the Netflix series Clickbait (2020) (NBC Universal International Studios, Matchbox Pictures) where he will play Roshan Amir, a detective with the Oakland Police Department who finds himself in the middle of a media storm. He also starred in the feature film, Below (2019) which premiered at the Melbourne International Film Festival alongside Anthony LaPaglia and Ryan Corr. Critics praised Phoenix's performance for carrying the heart of the film.
Phoenix Raei will also appear as Javad, a charismatic detainee and leader, in the highly anticipated drama Stateless (2020) with Cate Blanchett, Yvonne Strahovski and Jai Courtney. He can also be seen in the critically acclaimed ABC series The Heights (2019) (Matchbox Pictures and NBC) in which he plays series regular Ash.
