Nico Hines

Nico Hines

Nico Hines is the London editor for The Daily Beast. He is most noted for a piece on gay Olympians published on August 11, 2016. The story was widely acknowledged as "dangerous" and "homophobic". [0] Calls for the International Olympic Committee to revoke Hines' press credentials followed shortly. [0] Within hours, the Daily Beast altered the article to remove some identifying details, and later took down the story altogether, and published a retraction and apology, [0] stating "Publishing an article that in any way could be seen as homophobic is contrary to our mission." [0]

Reactions

In the article, Hines provided enough detail to identify the athletes, despite not providing names.

Openly gay Olympians reacted to the article via Twitter, including Amini Fonua and Gus Kenworthy. [0] Amini Fonua criticized the article, tweeting"Imagine the one space you can feel safe, the one space you're able to be yourself, ruined by a straight person who thinks it's all a joke?"[0] Gus Kenworthy stated that Hines "admitted to entrapment".
