Gorilla Controversy
On May 28, 2016 Michelle's son Isiah fell into the cage of Harambe The Gorilla at The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden. Harambe was shot to death. Many are calling for Michelle to be prosecuted for her negligence.
Michelle posted on Facebook about the incident, saying "accidents do happen", but then deleted her Facebook account when she started receiving backlash.
A petition with over 180,000 supporters called Justice for Harambe was created to encourage authorities and zoo officials to hold Michelle accountable for Harambe's death. However, Michelle will not be charged.
Another petition with over 20,000 supporters called Have CPS Investigate Michelle Gregg, was created to encourage Child Protective Services to investigate Michelle for negligence.
Zoological Activists
Gregg's incident with her son, Isiah Gregg, and Harambe raised concerns in the zoological community about safety of zoos, zoo goers, and the animals. The same week Harambe The Gorilla was killed, Franco Luis Ferrada Roman attempted to commit suicide by jumping into a lion pit at the Santiago Zoo.
This incident resulted in the killings of two lions.
Activists are calling for better security of enclosures to prevent the needless killings of more animals.
