Michael Christopher Mejia is a documented gang member who resides in Whittier, California. ^[0]

Mejia has a history of arrests for drugs and violence. He was released from state prison in April 2016 and on probation under California Assembly Bill 109, a state law mandating early prison releases for nonviolent offenders. ^[0]

On February 20, 2017, Michael fatally wounded Officer Keith Boyer and injured another officer during a shootout following a traffic crash in Whittier, California. ^[0]

Michael had previously killed his cousin, Roy Torres, in a separate shooting in East Los Angeles, just hours before the attack on Whittier Police Department officers. ^[0]

The officers were responding to a routine traffic call in the city when Michael pulled a semi-automatic handgun and opened fire. ^[0]

Michael stole a car from his cousin and fled from the scene of that crime.

He crashed into two cars about 8 a.m in Whittier. Police were responding to that crash when Officer Keith Boyer was killed by Michael. ^[0]
