Matthew Riehl (September 9, 1980 - December 31, 2017) was an Iraq War Veteran residing in Highlands Ranch, Colorado. ^[1]

Riehl served a tour of Iraq in 2009 until 2010. In 2012, Riehl was dishonorably discharged from the U.S. Army reserve after joining in 2003. ^[1]

He was known to police.

On December 13, 2017, Riehl identified himself as a libertarian candidate for the Douglas County Sheriff’s position in a YouTube YouTube video. The video is titled, “Fire Sheriff Spurlock.”

On Sunday, December 31, 2017, Riel fired upon deputies responding to a domestic disturbance call ambush style firing more than 100 rounds at them, killing deputy Zachary Parrish. ^[1]

Deputy Parrish was one five deputies who was shot while responding to a verbal disturbance call between Riehl and his roommate at around 5:15 a.m. at the Copper Canyon Apartments on the 3400 block County Line Road between Colorado and University Boulevards.

After being let in, and confronting Riehl, who had barricaded himself in a bedroom, Riehl fired immediately at them with a rifle. ^[1]
