Marley Dias
#1000BlackGirlBooks
A self-described book nerd, Dias started the #1000BlackGirlBooks project in 2015 to raise awareness of black girls being the main character in books.
So far, her project has reached 7,000 books, well exceeding her goal.
Subsequent Success
Since Dias began her initiative, she has appeared on *The Ellen DeGeneres Show * and met several influential figures including Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Hillary Clinton, and Melissa Harris Perry.
In September 2016, Dias was named 'Editor-in-Residence' at Elle.
Consulting Work
The Poughkeepsie City School District paid Dias $6,500 plus speaking fees to speak at a middle school workshop and deliver a keynote speech at a superintendent's conference in November of 2016.
Some weary of the high speaking fees have expressed detraction from hiring Dias.
Responding to criticism, Superintendent Nicole Williams stated that Dias's should not be discriminated against because of her age and that her resume was extremely impressive.
