Mark was bornBorn on February 26, 1986, in Phoenix, Arizona. His parents’ names are not known. He is the only child of his parents. His parents are Christian missionaries and were always traveling about. [2]

Growing up, he loved to eat rice a lot, when he was five years old, he moved to Albertville, France with his parents, he was raised in France but would sometimes travel to Hawaii and Canada back and forth with his parents to visit relatives. [3]

From France, they then moved to Tandala, Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly called Zaire) in Africa.[1]

He learned a lot about their culture, food, and friendships.

He lived in the jungles of DR Congo, while there, he loved to go sling-shot hunting for random birds with a few of his friends.

They would shoot a bird, set up a fire, roast, and eat them.[2]

In 1996, his family moved again, to Nairobi, Kenya.

Right from the fifth grade all the way to high school, he attended Rossylyn Academy located in Nairobi, Kenya. After graduating from high school, he had no idea what to do. [5]

Later on, he decided to return to the US and he started attended classes at Arizona State University. In 2008, he graduated with a degree in Global Studies. He still didn’t know what to do but he knew he didn’t want to end up working in an office. [2]

Therefore, with the money he had saved up, he traveled to Buenos Aires, Argentina a month after graduating. His goal was to learn, eat, and see what it was like to live there. He then decided to take a TESOL course to learn how to teach English. [2]

A month later, he received a Diploma, the reason he did this was so he could find a way to earn money anywhere in the world.

He then traveled to Uruguay and Chile before he went back to the US for his sister’s wedding. [1]

While in the US for his sister’s wedding, the idea of creating a blog where he could share his experience with his friends and family came to him.

Therefore, in early 2009, he created Migrationology.com and he began posting articles.

[1]

He then bought a one-way ticket to Bangkok, Thailand, a month later; he traveled throughout Southeast Asia either with a friend or by himself for a duration of 6 months. As he traveled, he blogged along the way where internet was available. [3]

When he was in the Philippines, he got an email from his friend named Joel who was in Nairobi, the email said, “I’m joining you, where should I buy my plane ticket?” they met in Bangkok and ate for a couple of months before they both realized their finances were almost finished.

[3]

He then decided to use his university degree and a TESOL certification and he got a job as an English lecturer in a private institute in Bangkok for a year.

His friend got a job as an English teacher in a rural school in Thailand. [1]

He enjoyed teaching but he was not the type of person that can sit in a classroom all day.

While teaching, he would still do his blogging, it was then he realized that his blog was growing and had potential.

[2]

He did many online projects and failed at many of them, he also made a commitment to never have to teach English again.

He kept on with his online project and after finishing his one-year of teaching he still didn’t have enough money to live off.

[2]

He then started frugal living and was able to save 90% of the money he earned from teaching.

He then published Eating Thai Food Guide, this was his first e-book, it allowed him to earn more money.

[1]

He launched his YouTube channel “Mark Weins” in July 2009, he uploads vlogging videos of his travels and the foods he eats from different countries around the world. He has over 6.44 million subscribers on his YouTube channel. [2]

He has two other channels named, "Mark Abroad" and "Big on Spice".

New York Magazine, CNN, and Andrew Zimmern have featured him as a Thai food expert .[2]

In 2019, he, Khun Tan (Thai food blogger), Khun Pongthep (designer and actor), Chef Gigg (Chef and Thai Iron Chef Champion) opened a restaurant, named (Phed Mark), in Bangkok. [2]

He has stated that

While I have absolutely nothing against eating vegan occasionally, I simply enjoy eating animals: meat tastes awesome.

So no, I probably would never consider being vegan.

That being said, I do try to eat red meats in moderation and cutback on deep fried foods.”

While living and teaching in Thailand, he met a woman named Ying, she is a cook, a traveler, and an eater.

They got married in July 2013.

“I’m so excited to be married, and part of the reason is that it means that I don’t have to say goodbye to my wife (previous girlfriend), but I’m taking her with me everywhere I go.

We work together, so she’s my wife and partner in travel.”

[5]

“I do enjoy cooking when I have an opportunity, but I lived in a studio apartment with no kitchen for so many years (before getting married) that I got in the habit of not cooking.

Now that I am married, my wife and her mother cook so incredibly well, I barely touch the wok!” [5]

They have a son named Micah, he introduced his son to the world in a YouTube video titled “ Say Hello to Micah Wiens,” it was uploaded on November 17, 2016.[3]

“You know some people how they like love certain names, and how they have been dreaming about naming someone a certain name that they love.

I have never ever had any of those thoughts.

So we finally came across Micah and what we’re thinking is that his first name will be English and then his middle name will be Thai and then his last name of course will be Wiens.”
