Lane Graves, a 2 year old child, vacationing with his family at Walt Disney World - Orlando, FL - Theme Park, Resort, was attacked and killed by an Alligator on June 14th, 2016. His parents were Matt Graves and Melissa Graves, and he was born on August 3, 2013.
A search ensued for the gator and the child throughout the night and through the following day.
Lane's body was recovered at 1:45PM EST on June 15th, 2016.
The Sheriff reported that the body had been found intact, meaning that the baby was swallowed whole and was still alive in the alligator's stomach while being burned and suffocated by digestive enzymes.
Community Reaction
On August 3, 2016 which was supposed to be Lane's third birthday, September 3, 2016 a memorial event called Love for Lane was held.
More than 600 people attended the event at a football stadium of a high school in Omaha, Nebraska. Both of Lane's parents Melissa Graves and Matt Graves spoke at the event before they all released thousands of blue balloons in his memory. The was organized by Brandi Miller a neighbor to the Graves family.
Melissa Graves had said “My baby — I owe it to him to honor him,” and “You’ll always be Mommy’s loving, sweet, baby boy.... We miss you, buddy, and we miss those hugs and kisses.”
Matt Graves told the event goers “My wife will tell you those are the happiest days of her life, and I couldn’t agree with her more,” and“Happy birthday, buddy.”
Both of Lane’s parents spent the event handing out M&M cookies which were Lane's favorite treat, silver crosses and prayer cards with a photo of their boy on the front.
Lighthouse Tribute
In August 2017, on the first anniversary of Laney's death, Disney World honored him with a "Lighthouse Tribute".
