Early Life & Education
Frankel was born and raised in New York City.
His father was an executive editor for the New York Times and his mother was an editor at Newsday as well as a marketing director for the New York City Opera. Frankel attended Syracuse University and graduated with a degree in Broadcast Journalism and Political Science.
Career
Early Beginnings
Frankel began his career as a radio producer for Bob Costas and later became a producer at NFL Films. He moved to South Florida to become a local sports broadcaster. Frankel made the move to national television as a correspondent for Good Morning America . For several years he would be put on general assignment on different shows and networks including ABC World News Tonight and Nightline. Frankel was a correspondent for The Early Show prior to joining HBO. As a correspondent of major networks, Frankel covered US troops in Kuwait prior to the 2003 invasion of Iraq and in 1997 climb 3,000 feet in Yosemite National Park.

In the spring of 2006, Frankel became a correspondent for the HBO show Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel. As a member of the Real Sports team, Frankel received an Emmy nomination for his report “Big Coal,” which looked at the federal government’s roll back of the Clean Air Act’s New Source Review and the effects of air pollution on young athletes. [1] Other notable stories Frankel covered include the profile of rehabilitated baseball star Josh Hamilton; the use of performance enhancing drugs in horses; the unique bond shared by George and Coby Karl; an investigation into the death of boxer Arturo Gatti; and the impact of budget cuts on local high school athletic programs in the state of Ohio.
Documentaries
In 2007, Frankel produced and directed the independent documentary Hellfighters which follows the story of the Harlem Hellfighters football team and their coach Duke Ferguson. The film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and was featured on ESPN.

Frankel resides in Manhattan with his wife (Erin Richards) and two children; h e and Erin got married in September 2003.
In his free time, Frankel enjoys training and competing in marathons, triathlons, and Ironman competitions.
