Biography
Halpin is a native of South Carolina, a place where he lived for most of his life.
He grew up in the areas of Charleston and Raleigh.
[7]He is an alum of Athens Drive High School.
Education
After high school, Halpin graduated from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Computer science and Cognitive science.
He was a part of Phi Beta Kappa and other various activists groups.
He also attended University of Edinburgh for nearly seven years.
He was also a visiting research scholar at University of Oxford.
Career
Early in his career, Halpin worked for academic institutions often as a research in the digital humanities and other web-based projects.
He was the Project Manager at Duke University where he managed the HASTAC project.
He was also a the GRDDL Working Group Chair for the World Wide Web Consortium at University of Edinburgh.
World Wide Web Consortium
Halpin was a team member of the WWW Consortium as part of the Technology and Society domain.He
created and ledthe web cryptography and web authentication working groups that deployed standards into billions of users via all major browsers. [6]
At MIT, Halpin is a part-time visiting Senior Research Scientist.
He is a researcher along with Alex "Sandy" Pentland on big data, cybersecurity, and blockchain technologies at the MIT Sociotechnical Research Center.

Halpin has been a technologist for several years where he has been involved in several projects.
His skills are associated with open data, search engines, security, philosophy of language and mind, Javascript, XML, RDF, Python/Perl/C/Haskell programming, UNIX sysadmin,visualization, non-profit management, poststructuralism.
