Fatehah Mohd Omar
Fatehah Mohd Omar
Mohd Omar, Fatehah is a Malaysian-American Lecturer at the University Sains Malaysia and the L’Oréal-UNESCO Awards for Women in Science program's grant recipient of her research on wastewater treatment for palm oil industries [1] She was born on February 27, 1981, in Mississippi, United States of America.
Early Life and Education
Growing up, Fatehah looked up to her mother, a biochemist and her father, a chemical engineer. [1] Her father, Professor Ir. Mohd Omar Ab Kadir also conducted research on wastewater treatment. This, in turn, inspired her to continue in his footsteps and enter that field.
Fatehah attended St. George's girl school in 1994 - 1998 and has studied Science Matriculation at the University Sains Malaysia in 1999. She holds Bachelor's degree in Environmental Technology from the University Sains Malaysia (2000 - 2004), Master's degree in Wastewater Treatment from the University Sains Malaysia (2004 - 2007), and Doctoral degree in Environmental Science from the University of Geneva (2010 - 2015). Her study there provided crucial information on the movement and the transformation that nano-sized pollutants undergo in various conditions.
Career
In 2006, Fatehah worked in an Advanced Micro Devices Export Sdn Bhd Company as an Environmental Engineer, where she monitored and analyzed a Research and development on semiconductor wastewater treatment and wastewater.
In 2007 – 2009, Omar was an Assistant Resident Engineer (ARE) for Environmental, Safety and Traffic Management at WNA Consultant Sdn Bhd Company. There she worked on a Highway Construction PLPT2 Project: Package 3 CH26100 (Ladang Ketengah) to CH40038 (Ladang Penyelidikan MARDI) for three months on the position of supervised contractor relevant to EHS and traffic issues, and checked technical reports before submission to JKR.
Fatehah worked as a French language teacher in Permanent Mission of Malaysia, Geneva, Switzerland in 2012.
Currently, Fatehah Mohd Omar is a Lecturer at the School of Civil Engineering, Engineering Campus, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Malaysia.
Dr Fatehah said, “Women have an important role in science. Do not allow obstacles to stand in your way to meet your goals. Persistency and consistency are the key factors that will lead to your success. Respect and be modest to everyone for knowledge is gained even through the smallest lessons.”
** Awards
Dr. Fatehah was recently awarded the L’Oréal-UNESCO Awards for Women in Science Malaysian Fellowship 2016 in October 2016 for her research entitled, “Behavior and Fate of Suspended Suspended Solids in Palm oil Mill Effluent (POME) in the Presence of Natural Biopolymers for the Optimization of Wastewater Treatment Processes”.
She also received a grant from the International Foundation for Science (IFS) from Sweden for her research on the treatability process of new emerging pollutants (nanoparticles) in potable water supply and industrial wastewater process using natural bio flocculants and waste by-product coagulant.
In April 2016, she represented USM and collaborated with the National Hydraulic Research Institute Malaysia (NAHRIM) at the 44th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva in Switzerland, where they won awards including a special prize from the Korea Invention Promotion Association to NAHRIM Water Scan "NExuS", and 3 golden awards NAHRIM Lab On Chip, Systémed'analyse et de monitoring de la qualité de l'eau, and NAHRIM Water Scan "NExuS" pour collecter et transmettre des donnéessur la qualité de l'eau, and NAHRIM Systéme portable de traitementd'analysed'eau.
'Certificate, Bronze Medal and Memento' (Outstanding Woman in Engineering - 2017.) has been bestowed to Dr. Fatehah Mohd Omar in view of recognition of her Initiatives, and Developments in Environmental Engineering by the Guest of Honors of AWM 2017 on March 4, 2017, at Radha Regent, Chennai City, India.
