Deric Lostutter

Deric Lostutter

Deric Lostutter (born 05/08/1987) is a hacker and activist known by the online moniker KYAnonymous. Deric currently works as a private investigator. [2][7]

Personal Life

Deric Lostutter is a hacker from the small town of King, North Carolina. His father was a tower guard at the local prison. His parents were divorced and home life was sometimes rough. He told Rolling Stone Magazine about a time when he witnessed his mother being beaten, blacked out and stabbed her assaulter in the stomach. Deric found solace and escape in computers.

Deric Lostutter moved to Winchester, Kentucky and joined the hacking group Anonymous early on, quickly making a name for himself under the moniker KYAnonymous. Deric became notorious for exposing a cover-up of a rape case involving Steubenville High School students.

The media attention from the Steubenville case left Lostutter broke and trying to make ends meet.

In an article with Salon, Deric blamed his lawyer Tor Ekeland, for failing to protect his character which led to perpetual doxing and in turn, eviction after eviction. Around that time, Deric married Jennifer Sanders and became a father to her 7 year old child. They moved to Salem, North Carolina and started doing webcam porn. [6]

While his intervention did expose wrongdoing, it was deemed unlawful and in 2017 Lostutter was sentenced to 2 years in jail.

Education

Deric Lostutter got his first introduction to Computer Science at West Stokes High School where he took classes for three years. He ended up graduating from George Rogers Clark High School. Later, he started pursuing his bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice and Data Forensics at Strayer University. [5]

Career

In his last year of high school, Deric worked as an electrical contractor at Lowe's. He then got a job providing technical support for blackberry devices at Sprint. His next gig was as an assistant manager at Dan's Discount Jewelry and Pawn. [5]

Around 2013, Deric started working in cybersecurity. First as a freelance penetration tester under the company name, Via-View Inc. eventually founding his own private investigation and cyber-security consulting business. Around that time, Deric also launched the HealthCare.Gov website for General Dynamics Information Technology and worked as an internet manager for two different Chrysler dealerships. [5]

Deric then started working as a firearms expert at Dan's Discount Jewelry and Pawn. After that, Deric moved to Salem, North Carolina with his wife, started doing webcam porn and opened up his private investigation and multi-purpose computer shop. [5][6]

In June of 2016, Lostutter started working as an internet marketing consultant for Frank Myers Investments and serving legal documents for Monumental PS/DueProcessUSA.

He also stated working as an investigative reporter for TruthVoice, a political online publication in Ohio. [5] He later did the same thing for AmericanNewsX.

Deric is also a political commentator for Fox News. [2]

Early Anonymous Work

Under the name KYAnonymous, Deric launched his first campaign called OpEducation against local school board members, leading superintendent Elaine Farris to retire from the public scrutiny. His next target was a man named Hunter Moore who leveraged revenge porn against his ex. [7]

His second most high profile Anonymous case was against Westboro Baptist Church, who had announced a plan to protest the vigil for the children killed in the Newtown school shooting. OP Westboro was sort of controversial in the Anonymous circle, with the webmaster of Your Anonymous News posting: [7]

"One idiot has decided to post a press release against Westboro?

I have a bad feeling about this operation.

Everyone’s watching us now, but this bullshit is taking away valuable resources that could be used, you know, actually fighting dictators, not failtrolls?

THINK BEFORE YOU SAY SOMETHING STUPID"

Anonymous proceeded to take down the church’s website, God Hates Fags, and started a petition against Westboro’s tax-exempt status. Lostutter went on to organize a rally called Occupy Newtown, getting help from plainclothes cops and Hell’s Angels to form a protective barrier around the funeral. [7]

Steubenville Rape Case

In August of 2012, played a prominent role in uncovering a case in which a teenage girl was raped by two Steubenville athletes, Ma’lik Richmond and Trent Mays. After venting about a New York Times article he read involving the rape of a 16 year old and its alleged coverup in a small town, Lostutter was contacted by a woman named Michelle McKee who had incriminating tweets and photos out of Steubenville, Ohio. Her friend, Alexandria Goddard, was hit with a defamation lawsuit by the family of Cody Saltsman, one of the high school footballers who posted a photo of the victim from the night of the incident on Twitter. [7]

The Video

Deric christened the operation Op RollRedRoll, after the football team's slogan.

He donned a Guy Fawkes mask and disguised his voice with a text-to-speech program called Cepstral David to deliver the manifesto. In the video he promises to dox everyone involved "unless all accused parties come forward by New Year's Day and issue a public apology to the girl and her family". [7]

A computer technician for the United States Department of Defense named Noah McHugh then hacked into the school football team fan website and left Deric's manifesto on the front page. After taking credit for it, he tweeted: [7]

"It’s not a government site or anything.

It would be the same as me hacking into a WordPress.

Not much the cops do about it"

Anonymous then doxed the domain master, Jim Parks, claiming he had pictures of underage women in his email and suggesting that he could have been involved in the rape. They even called the police to investigate possible "child pornography." Anonymous later apologized to Parks for the attack on his character. On December 29, over 1000 people gathered outside the courthouse in Steubenville to protest. Most of the crowd wore Guy Fawkes masks, and even spent time sharing their own sexual assaults and rapes. [7]

Hard Evidence

On January 2nd 2013, Deric uploaded video of one of the students, Michael Nodianos, joking about the alleged rape, saying that she looked dead and laughing about his friends urinating on her.

A site called Local Leaks released a massive dump of what they called “the Steubenville Files," which provided a timeline of the assault, suggesting that the assault was sustained and dragged on from party to party.

[7]

Deric is Doxed

However, after appearing on Anderson Cooper with his mask on, KYanonymous was drawing too much attention and the rest of the group didn't like it, so they threatened to dox Deric, producing what they thought were details about his life. They only found information about a decoy named Kyle Fields though, since Lostutter had already prepared for that scenario. All of a sudden someone posted a message on Twitter saying "Why did you do that Deric Lostutter?" They followed that up with a photograph he had taken of himself that had his home in the background. [7]

FBI Raid

On April 17th 2013, Deric's Kentucky home was raided by the Federal Bureau of Investigation for his alleged participation in exposing the Steubenville Ohio Rape Case Scandal in which 2 high school students were imprisoned for the rape of an underage girl, and 6 school officials were indicted on the cover-up. While, no one else received a sentence of more than 1 year, Lostutter was facing 25 years for his role. Despite warnings from the FBI, Deric Lostutter posted a video in which he unveiled his identity and told his story. Shortly afterwards, women's rights group founder Nita Chaudhary organized a rally on his behalf telling Rolling Stone Magazine: [7]

"This is rape culture at work.

Deric helped expose a horrible crime and cover-up, and he is facing five times more jail time than the rapists?

It’s disgusting and it’s a wake up call for our entire nation.”

Two Year Sentence

In 2017, Lostutter pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit computer hacking and lying to an FBI investigator involved in the Steubenville probe. He was sentenced to two years in prison. [8]

Upcoming Movie

New Regency and Brett Ratner and James Packer's RatPac Entertainment came together to buy the rights to the Rolling Stone article "Anonymous vs. Steubenville," written by David Kushner. Brad Pitt's production company, Plan B, will be producing the film. [19]
