David Yang (model)

David Yang is an international model from Scotland who is based in Shanghai, China. He has modeled for a variety of distinguished designers and brands including Valentino, Balenciaga and Zara.^[14]

Education

Yang attended King's College London where he received degrees in French literature and film studies. His studies at the college took him to participating in courses at Sorbonne University in Paris, France. In Paris David first tried his hand in professional modeling.^[15]

Career

When he was residing in London, Yang had modeled very briefly but chose to focus on his studies. David considered what he wanted to be, his interests ranging from academia to anthropological film documentary maker. While debating his future, offers from photographers, creative directors, and advertising directors kept finding Yang. He has even been stopped in the middle of the street by a talent scout who suggested he audition for modeling gigs.^[15]

David recalls his very first modeling gig was for a fashion show for Oceana, an ocean conservation group.^[14]

One of David's first official modeling jobs was for an Urban Outfitters campaign. He was the company's first Asian male model. In a 2019 interview on the subject, Yang stated,^[15]

“I think a few years ago there was a tokenistic thing about it, and some of the brands would pander to the market to be able to say they had used an Asian model, a black model, a Latino model or a South Asian model to show their customer base in that region."

Yang's big break came from being featured in a United States photo shoot in New York City for H&M. A call from his agent took him on an overnight journey from novice to pro. He has recalled the evening as an important event in his life, stating,^[15]

“It was a huge thing.
It was game-changing in terms of my career.
At the time, I was in a state of uncertainty … I had taken myself to Kyoto to regain a sense of self and to soak up the Zen.
I came back to London, got the visa, flew to New York, and then we shot that morning at 4am on the beach.
The whole thing was finished in a couple of hours; it [had a] great energy and a great vibe, and the shoot came out a few months later.

David Yang has worked with modeling agencies located all around the world.

He is signed to HEROES Model Management, Elite Paris, Why Not Model Management, Models 1, Uno Models, Longteng Model Management (Beijing), and IMM Bruxelles.^[14]^[26]
