Charleston Hartfield (May 16, 1983 - October 1, 2017) was an Las Vegas police officer, youth football coach, and military veteran. He was one of the casualties of the Mandalay Bay Resort Shooting on October 1, 2017.
Personal Life
Charles Hartfield was survived by his wife, Veronica and their two children.
His son was a standout high school football player at the time of his death, and his daughter was in elementary school.
Professionally, Hartfield was a police officer for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. Before that, he served in the U.S. Army as a sergeant for the Nevada Army National Guard; he was assigned to the to the 100th Quartermaster Company. [1] He served a total of 16 years in the military service, and 16 years of active military service and 11 years in law enforcement. [1]
In addition to his years as a public servant, he played a coaching role for his son's Henderson Cowboys.
In July 2017, Hartfield published a book about his life as a police officer called Memoirs of a Public Servant. [1] [5]
Death
On October 1, 2017, Charleston Hartfield was killed in a mass shooting at the Mandalay Bay Resort. He was attending the Route 91 Harvest festival.
Troy Rhett, fellow youth football coach, said the following about Charles: [1]
I don’t know a better man than Charles. They say it’s always the good ones we lose early. There’s no truer statement than that with Charles. [...] Our hearts have just been very heavy since hearing the news.
According to the LVMPD, two on-duty cops suffered gunshot wounds that night, as well: one was upgraded from critical to stable condition after undergoing surgery and one sustained minor injuries.
