Boris Sanchez joined CNN in as a New York-based correspondent and relocated to his hometown of Miami a year later. During his tenure, he's covered numerous breaking news events, which includes being one of the first reporters on the scene at both the Fort Lauderdale Airport shooting (2017) and the Orlando Pulse Nightclub massacre (2016).[2]

His reporting during violent unrest and riots following the shooting of an African-American man by police in Charlotte, North Carolina (2016), helped CNN win an Edward R. Murrow Award for breaking news coverage.[2]

During 2016 Sanchez covered several historic natural disasters, including tragic flooding in Louisiana, Hurricane Matthew in northern Florida and a devastating earthquake in Ecuador. During the 2016 presidential race, he traveled across the country to speak with voters and reported from the battleground state of Florida on Election Day.[2]

Prior to joining CNN, he anchored the 10:00 p.m. newscast at FOX 31 Denver, also contributing coverage across all the stations' programs since 2012. Sanchez also anchored breaking news coverage of the Arapahoe High School shooting (2013), the Black Forest Fire (2013) and the devastation caused by the historic floods of September 2013. [2]

Additionally he broke a series of stories on the implementation of Amendment 64, which legalized the recreational use of marijuana in Colorado. Sanchez's work culminated with a 2015 Heartland Emmy Award.[2]

Coronavirus Outbreak

On August 8, 2020, Sanchez had a heated exchange with a supporter of President Trump who claimed Democrats are exaggerating the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic's threat in order to advance their chances of election success.[14]

Bikers for Trump founder, Chris Cox, suggested the pandemic is being used to polarize the nation and expand mail-in voting for the 2020 election:

"I don't think that the Democrats are behind it, but I think that they are trying to polarize this nation," Cox said.

"I think they're trying to use this as a stepping stone to try to get mail-in ballots.

It's absurd.

We need to go to the polls and exercise our right to vote."[14]

Sanchez pushed Cox especially hard on his belief that some of the deaths related to COVID-19 are being exaggerated.

Cox said he thinks deaths that aren't directly due to coronavirus are being reported as such:

"It's being reported by doctors on both sides that this is not as bad as it's being reported," he said.

"I'm suggesting that a lot of people are dying from different things, and their death certificates are coming out to say they died from COVID."[14]

Boris Sanchez disputed that claim by asking Cox if he believes the pandemic was set in motion by design to undermine President Trump's reelection. He also added that there's a difference between spreading misinformation about the pandemic's origins and saying it's being politicized. He said:

"If you believe that Democrats are playing politics with this, that's one thing, but if you believe there's actually a conspiracy to fake the cause of death, that's an entirely different subject."

[14]

Cox said he's not a conspiracy theorist, but he was skeptical about the timing of the pandemic's outbreak happening during an election year.

"I think that time will show that it's not as bad they're saying it is," he said.

"After Nov. 3, I have a feeling this is going to disappear."

[14]

Sanchez pushed back, saying skepticism about the timeline of the pandemic expresses a rationale that is not based on scientific understanding.

He said:

"What you're saying is unscientific, and you're suggesting that somehow an organization decided that they were gonna kill all these people to affect an election.

You're suggesting that by saying it's a coincidence that it's happening in 2020.

It's not a coincidence.

For years, medical experts, people that know way more than I do about science and medicine, have been predicting that something like this is going to happen, but you somehow believe this is all done to target the president."

[14]

Cox tried to finish his final thoughts by saying he has heard doctors say that the pandemic is not as bad as it's reported, but he was cut off by Sanchez.

"Those same doctors also said that sex with demons is to blame for a number of medical ailments," Sanchez said.[14]
