Betty Murungi

Betty Murungi is a Human rights activist from Kenya.

Career

Betty Murundi has practised Law at national, regional and international levels, and also in the Management and Governance of Non-governmental and Non-profit organizations.

She serves on the board of the Kenya Human Rights Commission, the Women's Initiatives for Gender Justice at the International Criminal Court, The Hague, Netherlands, and is a past Board member of The Federation of Women Lawyers-Kenya.

Betty has been a Consultant and Legal Advisor to Rights & Democracy on gender-related crimes at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, since 1998. In addition, she has served as Legal Advisor to the Women's Human Rights Program at Rights and Democracy, Montreal, Canada.

From 2009 to 2013, she served as Vice-chairperson and Commissioner to the Truth, Justice, and Reconciliation Commission of Kenya and as the Africa representative on the Board of directors of the Trust Fund for Victims at the International Criminal Court.

Besides working in Kenya, Betty has also worked in South Sudan, Northern Uganda, Sierra Leone, Burundi, Rwanda and Liberia.

She co-founded and directed for eight years the Urgent Action Fund-Africa, an innovative Feminist fund that supports bold Human rights interventions particularly around Sexual minorities and other sexual autonomy and Reproductive health rights issues.

Achievements

In 2003, Betty Murundi received the Kenya National Honor of the Moran of the Burning Spear for her efforts in Human rights activism. In 2005, she was awarded the International Peace Advocate Award by the Cardozo Law School in New York.

Education

Betty attended Kenya School of Law at the University of Nairobi. In 2005-2006, she was a Visiting fellow at the Human Rights Program at Harvard Law School, Massachusetts, U.S.A.

Personal Life

Betty Murungi is married to James Orengo, a Lawyer, and Politician from Kenya.
