Bel Trew

Bel Trew

Bel Trew (Arabic: بل ترو) is a Middle East and North Africa reporter for The Times of London, most recently based in Cairo, Egypt. [1]

Education

Trew holds a BA in English Language and Literature from the University of Cambridge.

Career

Trew moved to Cairo, Egypt in January 2011 at the onset of the Arab Spring and worked for over two years as a freelance television and radio journalist, during which time she appeared regularly on outlets such as BBC TV and Radio, France 24, RTÉ, LBC, and Radio New Zealand. Trew joined the staff of The Times of London in 2013, where her work has focused on Egypt, Libya, and the Persian Gulf. [1]

Expulsion from Egypt

On 20 February 2018 Trew was arrested in the Cairo neighborhood of Shubra after interviewing a man whose nephew died on a migrant boat to Italy. Trew alleges that she was never informed of the charges against her and was threatened with a military trial. Less than 24 hours following her arrest, Trew was taken to Cairo International Airport and placed on an airplane to London.

Trew's employer, The Times of London, held back on reporting her expulsion for over a month in the hopes that it was a misunderstanding on the part of the Egyptian government and that she could return to cover the Egyptian presidential election of 2018. Trew has since been informed that the Egyptian government regards her as an "undesirable" and that she will not be permitted to return to Egypt.
