Career
Asma Khalid started her career at WAMU, the public-radio station that serves the Washington, D.C. area. Asma often uses data to dig into demographic trends; for example, she created the Perfect State Index to find the most “representative” US state ahead of the 2016 primary season. She was a Bringing Home the World Fellow in 2017.
Asma Khalid got her start in journalism from her home state, Indiana but was introduced to radio through an internship at BBC News hour in London during grad school.[4] Asma then moved to Boston where she joined the WBUR, Boston’s NPR station and has reported on a range of stories over the years from the2016 presidential campaign to the Boston Marathon bombing among others. [2]
Asma helped launch and lead a new unit called @BostonomiX at NPR's station WBUR where she reported on the future of work, business, and tech.
Especially on the forces that are driving the innovation economy in Massachusetts.
She's now on NPR's political team as a correspondent covering the 2020 presidential election and as a co-host of their political podcast.
Asma was once a reporter for WAMU in Washington, DC.
In all, Asma worked for NPR for seven years over a nine-year period.
During that time, she also was a political and general-assignment reporter.
Personal
Asma Khalid was born and raised in Indiana.
I'm from Indiana.
We grew up in a mostly Democratic county.
But my town was predominantly white and fairly conservative, a place where the Ten Commandments are engraved in marble outside the old County Courthouse.
I loved our childhood — summers playing basketball, winters sledding.
We weren't outsiders — I sold Girl Scout cookies, was captain of the tennis team.[2]
