Rape Accusations against Melanie Martinez
Melanie Martinez and Timothy Heller
Heller accused her former best friend Melanie Martinez of The Voice fame of raping her. In a Twitter post, Heller shares screenshots of her account of her relationship with Martinez, in which she describes her as controlling and hard to say no to. One night, Martinez pressed Heller with sexual advances, which Heller repetitively said no to. After getting her high on Marijuana, Martinez proceeded to perform oral sex on Heller then penetrated her with a sex toy. Martinez has admittedly denied the claims, and says that Heller "never said no" to what they did together.
Music Career
Heller alongside Jared Ryan Maldonado
Alongside Jared Ryan Maldonado, in 2014, Heller was part of the indie-pop band Dresses.
[1] Heller reflected on her experince in Dresses a a dark time in her life because she was struggling deeply with mental illness, had an extremely unsupportive team around her, and was subject to a lot of mental abuse.
After leaving Dresses, it took Heller years to get into music again and would have breakdowns when attempting to write songs.
She took a hiatus to work on herself and her mental health before returning to music again.
In October 2017, Atwood Magazine premiered her song "Sleep" which has been described as "haunting and dreamy."
In summarizing the inspration for the song, Heller says “I wrote this song when I was probably 18...
My best friend’s boyfriend had just cheated on her.
I wrote this song starting from his perspective, trying to win her back.
My friend’s reaction when she was opening up to me when this happened was that she just wanted to sleep it away.
So the chorus is from her perspective.”
