Spencer is a student at Appalachian State University, attending as a freshman. He played for the Appalachian college tennis team. [14]
On January 28, 2018, during a tennis match, he delivered a controversial, racist remark to his opponent, John Wilson IV, another collegiate tennis player playing for the North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University Aggies. [18] He was suspended indefinitely by Appalachian State's tennis team following this incident.

During a tennis match on January 28, 2018, Spencer Brown delivered a racist remark to his opponent.
His remark was "at least I know my dad".
His opponent brought this remark to light on Twitter. His opponent noted that there were other racist remarks, but only publicized one. Shortly after Spencer's remark, Spencer's tennis team coach, Bob Lake, stated, "..we have a black guy on our team." [18]
A day after the incident took place, the Associated Press released an article with the following quote referencing to Spencer's remark:
A white men’s college tennis player has been suspended after a black opponent tweeted that his on-court rival told him “at least I know my dad” during their weekend match.
Appalachian State University in North Carolina issued a statement Monday saying Spencer Brown, who’s white, was suspended indefinitely after Sunday’s match with North Carolina A&T State University, a historically black college.
Appalachian State apologized in its statement, calling the conduct “derogatory and offensive.”
Junior Tennis Career
Spencer has been playing junior tennis tournaments since 2013, but has been playing tennis since at least 2011.
