Somdip Dey (born December 13, 1990) is an Indian Artificial intelligence Scientist working on Embedded system, a Journalist and an entrepreneur.^[1][2][5] His primary work focuses on making artificial intelligence affordable and accessible in developing countries.^[3][4]

Dey hails from Kolkata, India, but at the moment he is based in London, England.^[3][25] He completed his Bachelor of Science (BSc) at St. Xavier's College, Kolkata, India, and Master of Science (MSc) at the University of Manchester, UK.^[6][7]

Dey currently works at the University of Essex and the Samsung R&D Institute, UK.^[8][9] Dey is also a serial entrepreneur. He co-founded Codeepy Pvt Ltd and ReMe Basket Ltd.^[10][11] He has served as an editor of Association for Computing Machinery's XRDS magazine and currently serves as the editor of Frontier in Blockchain: Fourth Industrial Revolution journal.^[12][13]

In 2012, Dey developed the first working prototype system to authenticate and authorize student's transcripts in a cost-effective manner using QR code as the medium. This work is later adopted by several institutes around the world as the mean to validate academic certificates and transcripts cost-effectively.^{[14][15][6][16]}

In 2014, as a member of the Codeepy team and to take actions in reducing food waste, Dey co-developed an application to enable users to share their leftover food with people in need.

This application won the 3Scale API Award at the Koding's 2014 Global Hackathon.^[4][17][18]

To make artificial intelligence based traffic categorization system affordable for developing countries Dey developed a traffic categorization methodology in 2018, which is capable of processing on the device and mimics a human's ability to learn from the surrounding to improve its learning ability compared to conventional methodologies.

Dey's traffic categorization work was presented at the 2018 NASA/European Space Agency Conference on Adaptive Hardware Systems (NASA/ESA AHS).^[19][3] Dey's other notable work includes "foodonomics", a product which utilizes technologies like artificial intelligence, blockchain and edge computing to reduce food waste.^[20][5]

Dey's research also includes developing methodologies to manage computing resources on mobile devices in order to optimize for performance and energy efficiency of executing applications by understanding the user's behaviour of using the device by employing artificial intelligence.^{[21][22][23][24]}
