Early Life
Talouni's Live Instagram Feed
Sofia Talouni, on Monday, April 13, 2020 (during the COVID-19 lock-down) used her nightly Instagram Live series – watched by over 100,000 people – to instruct Moroccan women following her to download and install gay dating apps from the app store and use them to find gay men in their vicinity. She told her viewers to create fake profiles that will enable them to identify the gay men living in their communities[12].
Sofia Talouni told her followers that the three “famous” gay dating apps are Grindr, Planet Romeo, and Hornet. She said that these apps will show them the gay people who are 100 meters, 200 meters, or even one meter close to them.
Perhaps, near them in the living room since everyone is home now.
She also added that It could even show them their husbands, their sons, their neighbors from next door, or even their cousins[13].
Not long after then, on Friday, April 17, 2020, Talouni's Instagram account was deleted by the Instagram community.
Speculated Reasons for Talouni's Action
Sofia Talouni, like many transgender and non-gender conformists in the Arab world, has been stigmatized, verbally assaulted, and even physically abused. In her case, she has not spoken to her dad in more than 20 years.
That must have created a dark stone in her heart.
She was angry and that made her do what she did.
She perhaps wanted not to be the only one rejected and kicked out.
By exposing cisgender gay men, Talouni wanted to take public revenge against those who get by without facing the discrimination that she faces as an Arab trans woman in a Muslim society[1].
Another viable reason for Sofia Talouni's action could be that she wanted to be accepted by the Moroccan public.
The Havoc Sofia Talouni Caused
Sofia Talouni's live Instagram feed did not go without causing some havoc.
It is a truth that the Moroccans have a strong hatred for gay.
The queer community (the gay/ LGBT community) in Morocco had been living in peace for a while because as long as nobody knows them[14].
After her Instagram live video, Moroccans have created hundreds of Facebook groups just to find gay people and expose them. According to Nassim, a gay man who lives in Casablanca, she has ruined the lives of so many people just in the past four days, at least 40 gay men have been exposed and kicked out of their homes.
There are also reports of two suicide cases, death threats, and physical assaults[12].
