Shin Kubota

Shin Kubota

Shin has spent his life as a researcher and an educator, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather.

Since graduating at the Graduate School of Science, Hokkaido University in 1981, Shin has been working on the systematics of jellyfish, clarifying life-history of a given species, e.g. unknown polyp and known jellyfish directly connected by culture for the first time in the world.

Shin continued his studies surrounded by a subtropical environment with more diverse jelly fish fauna from Hokkaido, particularly concentrating on the biological study of the immortal jellyfish Turritopsis.

He belongs to many Academic Societies; the Hydrozoan Society; Zoological Society of Japan; Biogeographical Society of Japan, where he received an honorable award since the submitting 24 original papers (as the first author) between 2003 and 2009.

Shin also studies, by himself, a wide variety of creatures for their distribution, ecology, physiology and behaviour which have been investigated and reported.

Especially some papers on the rejuvenation and immortality of Turritopsis are considered to be a key to the secret of life.

Shin is very interested in creature-themed songs and has so far released 19 songs, 8 of which can be sung in karaoke bars all over Japan.
