Border Patrol Check Point
On July 21st, 2017, while Shane and her children were on their way back to California, they were pulled over at a check point by Border patrol agents.
They were stopped near Interstate 10 west, past El Paso before Deming, New Mexico. [3]
The border patrol agents pulled her over, and all she had to do was answer some questions, so Shane decided to take out her phone and began video recording the interaction between herself and the border patrol agents.
With the help of her kids she was able to get a lot on video.
When it came time to answer whether or not she is an American Citizen, she refused.
After a long back and forth between her and the officers who try to get her to say that she's a citizen, they let her go.
She was held for more than 90 minutes.
Shane says about the encounter:
“Basically, make sure you have a full tank of gas to keep your air conditioner running, some water and some snacks.
I also recommend a pillow cuz this was a great place to take a nap.
And they do have bathrooms in the cells where they hold people when they pull them out of their cars.”
The video has been seen by nearly a million people with thousands of shares.
Her video went viral, dividing up people's beliefs and opinions.
Shane has mentioned how many of the families of her students have complained about the harassment they receive by border patrol agents whenever they travel.
