Steve Perez was a Mexican American Sergeant for the Houston Police Department who died while on duty to save lives during Hurricane Harvey.
Background
A resident of the state of Texas for many years, he lives in the city of Houston. He was married to Cheryl Perez for many years.
Career
Officer Perez was a police officer for the Houston Police Department for 34 years. He eventually became a Sergeant.
Hurricane Harvey
On August 28th, 2017, amidst the intensity of Hurricane Harvey arriving near shores of Texas, Sgt. Perez felt compelled to check in for duty with the police department in order to do his part in the work to save people from the floods.
The hurricane hit a category 4 and continues to caused flooding in large parts of southern Texas as a tropical storm.
He ignored calls from his wife to remain home and left his home early Sunday morning.
According to Chief Acevedo during a press conference, it is reported that he told his wife that “We’ve got work too do", referring to the department took to the streets of Houston to help flood victims.
Sgt. Perez died stuck in the storm while driving toward the department to report for duty.
He is the 11th victim to died from the Hurricane.
