He dropped out of high school and started playing guitar in a series of unsuccessful blues-based rock bands throughout the 1970s, sometimes using the name Zorky Charlemagne, and sometimes taking on menial day jobs. One band, whitehorse, had a vocalist named Micki Marz who influenced the later change of name.
