Early Life and Education
Horine grew up in rural Maine and was attracted to his parents'National Geographic magazines. His parents were originally from Chicago and were motivated to move to Maine by the Back-to-the-land movement. [7] It was in Maine where Horine received his first 35mm camera and started taking pictures of the nature around him. After graduating secondary school, he went on to attend Hartwick College in upstate New York City to study religion and eastern philosophy. In college, Horine would continue with photography and started using Polaroid to capture the moments around him. [7]
Moving to New York and Career Beginnings
Sam Horine Taking a Picture
In 2002, Horine moved to Brooklyn because his friend needed a roommate and was broke the first few months. After being given a Canon point-and-shoot for Christmas, Horine began to take pictures of the cityscapes that surrounded him. [8] He upgraded to a Canon 20d and more opportunities began to pop up around him. Horine started shooting his friend's bands and their show which put his foot in the door of the NYC music scene, resulting in a snowball effect of doing more shows. Horine describes his relationships at the time as "symbiotic." [7] Eventually, Horine felt a sense of repetitiveness creep up on him with his work which resulted in him to change up his style and shoot the culture of the show rather than the show itself. [7] This was an important moment in Horine's photography career because it led him down a rabbit hole of experimentation and helped him cement his style that would mark his future work. [8]
