In 2012, Buettner received a Pulitzer Prize for his work in Journalism at The New York Times. ^[1] Danny Hakim and Buettner worked on stories that revealed rapes, beatings and more than 1,200 unexplained deaths over the past decade of developmentally disabled people in New York State group homes, leading to removal of two top officials, movement to fire 130 employees and passage of remedial laws. ^[1]

On October 1, 2016, Buetter, David Barstow, and Susanne Craig, first broke the story of Donald Trump's 1995 Income tax returns on The New York Times. ^[1]
