Press conference
June 3, 2020 was Washington's first time speaking publicly since George Floyd was killed on Memorial Day. A public press conference was held in the Minneapolis city hall. She was accompanied by her daughter Gianna Floyd, retired NBA star Stephen Jackson, and Atlanta-based attorneys Justin Miller and Chris Stewart.[8][9][5][11]
During the emotional press conference Washington remembered Floyd as "a good man".
Washington said, "I want everybody to know what these officers took.
At the end of the day, they get to go home and be with their families," Washington said through tears.
"Gianna does not have a father. He will never see her grow up, graduate. He will never walk her down the aisle. If there's a problem she's having and she needs her dad, she does not have that anymore.". Lamenting the fact that Gianna will grow up without her father.
“I’m here for my baby.
I’m here for George because I want justice for him, and I want justice for him because he was good.
No matter what anybody thinks, he was good, and this is the proof that he was a good man,".
Referring to his daughter Gianna.
Washington later shared a memory of Floyd, she discussed how Floyd was "so happy to have her" after Gianna was born.
"He slept the whole time that I went through labor, but when he heard her cry, he got up.
I still have a picture of him waking up and getting his baby," Washington said sobbing.
"He loved her.
He loved her so much."
She also said Floyd left Houston and went to Minneapolis to find new job opportunities and to provide for her and his daughter.
