Personal Life and Activities

Young has lived in the city of Norfolk, Virginia for most of her life. She is married to Steven Young, a person whom she collaborates with on many of her personal projects. [22]

She works in the transportation industry and aspires to become a professional reporter.

Facebook Live News Reporting

For the past few years, Rhoda has been preparing herself as an investigative journalist by occasionally being present at areas in her neighborhood where a crime or a fire is taking place in real time.

Throughout 2017, Young started taking her passion to be an investigative journalist more seriously.

She began actively seeking areas to report through the use of Facebook Live.

Often, the team is composed of herself and husband, who dives into the role of cameraman.

Their way of covering exclusive news in the city of Norfolk is usually by stumbling on them.

Style

Young is a lively and amicable personality as a reporter, giving plenty of energy as an event takes place.

She is undaunted by any restriction of vocabulary and is not afraid to use expletives as emphasis in her reporting.

As she says herself in an interview:

“I love making videos.

I always make Facebook videos of anything.

Accidents, fires, cooking, playing jokes on people.

I just love videos.

Anything that’s funny or exciting, I like to videotape it.”

[14]

House on Fire

On November 27th, 2017, as Young and her husband, Steven Young, were on their way to the bank, the couple witnessed smoke coming out of a house in the distance.

The two decided to make news coverage of it through social media.

They were the first ones on the scene of a house fire.

The Facebook live broadcast of the Youngs covering the fire lasted close to an hour.

[2]

She began the broadcast of the 500 block of Birmingham Ave. fire with:

“Hey look!

This is Rhoda Young; I’m going live.

The fire truck is right behind me.

This is Rhoda Young reporting live!

I’m a volunteer, WAVY-TV 10 is not on the scene, but Rhoda Young is on the scene.

We have an active house fire, and it’s burning.”

Since her broadcast, the video has gone viral with thousands of people praising her efforts.

During the fire, she was able to solve a crime when she caught the arson who set the fire.

[2]

Her reporting is as follows:

"The owner of the house was upstairs when the fire started...Doing my investigation, I have now discovered his motherfucking hair was on fire, and his pants is burned off his damn leg.

So he was right there when the fire started, and he got a six pack of godd**n PBR. So now I gotta figure out how he start that fire... Once again, that's the owner drunk as a motherfucker." [2]

The owner of the house whom Young interacted with and started drinking PBR was later arrested due to her investigation in the fire.

Donald William Stricker III was charged with burning an occupied dwelling.

Domino's Incident

In September 2019, Rhoda Young uploaded a video on Twitter which quickly went viral receiving more than 1.8 million views.

The video depicts her complaining to the manager of a Domino's Pizza over an employee preparing her order of chicken wings in a dirty sink. [27] [26]

The video was later shared on WorldStarHipHop where it has received over 201,000 views. [28]
