Rachel's parents were divorced, and coping with the turmoil is one of the reasons she started writing poetry.
In 2016, she released her book Loving the Ocean Won’t Keep it from Killing You. The title comes from a line in the book. The narrator says, about her abuser, “She loved him. But she also loved the ocean, and loving the ocean won’t keep it from killing you.”
