Peter Okebukola (Prof.)

Background Information

Peter Okebukola was born in Ilesa on February 17, 1951. He is a distinguished professor of science and computer education at Lagos State University, Nigeria. He is married to Foluso Olutoyin Fejemilehin and blessed with two sons and two daughters. He had his higher education at the University of Ibadan where he obtained his Bachelor’s degree in 1973 followed by Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in Science Education in the same university.

Specialization

He had specialized science and technology training at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.), and Harvard University, both in Cambridge, USA. He is a Fellow of the International Academy of Education and between 1998 and 2007.

Accomplishment

Prof. Peter Okebukola is the inventor of the culture-techno-contextual (CTC) approach to science teaching and learning that is gaining global acclaim as a tool for breaking barriers to meaningful learning of difficult concepts in STEM.

He has served as Team Leader of several quality assurance projects involving Unesco, the African Union, the World Bank, Association of African Universities and the Global University Network for Innovation (GUNi-Africa).

Awards

He is the first African to win the prestigious UNESCO Prize for the Communication of Science in 1992.

He has won several international gold medals in science and computer education.

Books and Journals

Prof. Peter Okebukola has written a lot of books which include Repositioning University Education; the ways forward, winning the battle against the depressing quality of education in Nigeria, rethinking teacher education in Nigeria, Primary Education in Nigeria and among others.
