Peggy Sheeran
Peggy Sheeran
Margaret Regina Sheeran (born in 1949), who is also known as Peggy Sheeran, is the daughter of Notorious Irish hitman, Frank Sheeran. She was portrayed by Anna Paquin in Martin Scorsese's 2019 film, The Irishman. [3]
Personal Life
Peggy Sheeran was born in Darby, Pennsylvania to the infamous hitman Frank Sheeran and an Irish immigrant named Mary Leddy whom he had met at a boxing match. The disintegration of their marriage was detailed in the book "I Heard You Paint Houses" by Charles Brandt. Mary was a devout Catholic and is the mother of Peggy's sisters MaryAnne and Dolores. Peggy also has a sister named Connie from Frank Sheeran's second wife, Irene. Dolores is a medical secretary and realtor who had a stroke in 2016, but recovered well. She is the only sister who has spoken publicly about her father's connection to the murder of Jimmy Hoffa. Not much is known about the rest of her sisters, although MaryAnne passed away in 2018 at the age of 69.[1]
Peggy Sheeran has worked as an executive assistant at many jobs.
Her last job was with Unisys and she is presumably retired. [1]
Frank Sheeran's Alleged Murder Of Jimmy Hoffa
Frank Sheeran's confession to Hoffa's murder is recorded in the book "I Heard You Paint Houses" by Charles Brandt. Jimmy Hoffa vanished in Detroit and his body was never found. At the time, the mob was angry with Hoffa because they thought he was a snitch and were concerned he'd block them from Teamsters’ pension funds if he became union president again. Frank Sheeran confessed to shooting him at the order of mob boss Russell Bufalino. Sheeran recounted what Bufalino said to him before he asked him to carry out the hit: [2]
"Your friend made one threat too many in his life… there won’t be a body.
My Irishman, we did all we could for the man.
Nobody could tell that man what it is.
We get into Detroit together Wednesday night."
Although not everyone is sold tht Frank killed Hoffa, his name did appear on a 1976 Federal Bureau of Investigation case agent list investigating Hoffa’s disappearance called "The Hoffex Memo." [4]
An article in Slate attempted to debunk Sheeran’s claims by pointing out inconsistencies in his confession to the murder of Crazy Joe Gallo at a Little Italy Clam House. Eyewitnesses who described the hitman claim he looked nothing like Sheeran. The Slate article suggests that Salvatore “Sally Bugs” Briguglio was likely the triggerman and Tony Pro Provenzano, who was in a feud with Hoffa at the time, ordered the hit. [5]
A newspaper in Pennsylvania called The Daily Item ran an Associated Press article describing Sheeran as “Big Irish Sheeran, a former Teamster boss and Hoffa bagman.” In the paper, Sheeran made the claim that President Richard Nixon and Former Attorney General John Mitchell ordered Hoffa’s “assassination. He told reporters: [4]
"This was purely a Republican, Old-Guard Nixon-Mitchell conspiracy to kill Jimmy Hoffa."
Charles Brandt feels that Frank fabricated that story to keep himself safe and later confessed due to Catholic guilt. Brandt said that after their last session writing his book, Sheeran refused to eat and died 6 weeks later at the age of 83.[4]
Peggy's Relationship With Her Father
Frank had a distant but loving relationship with Peggy, whom he would take to Johnny Monk’s Club.
The two had picnics and enjoyed trips to Willow Grove Amusement Park. Their relationship dissolved on August 3, 1975 when Peggy suspected her father had something to do with the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa, whom she had almost considered a father figure. According to Frank, they were all watching news of Hoffa's disappearance on TV when Peggy suspected something was off and "stared into his soul". She asked him to leave and said, “I don’t even want to know a person like you.” [1]
Peggy Left Out Of Her Father's Obituary
When Frank Sheeran died of natural causes in 2003, Peggy was famously left out of the obituary, which read:[1]
“SHEERAN FRANK J. formerly of Bensalem, PA, and Wilmington, DE on December 14, 2003; beloved father of MaryAnne Cahill (Richard), Connie Griffin and Delores Miller (Michael); loving grandfather of Christopher, Karen, Brittany, and Jake; great grandfather of Sarah.

Peggy's Portrayal In The Irishman
Peggy Sheeran is portrayed in Martin Scorsese's The Irishman by Anna Paquin. There was an uproar over the fact that she only ever speaks a few lines throughout the entire movie. But Scorsese says that was an intentional. He felt that her silence and scorching glare was more powerful than any dialogue that could be assigned to her: [2]
"I decided that she doesn’t have to say anything.
You see your father do something like that, I’m sorry.
… You see him crush the guy’s hand like that, other kids maybe, but this kid couldn’t take it.
She looks at him.
She knows he’s up to something and Lucy was great, but Anna ultimately was amazing in the looks."
