Ovidio Guzman Lopez
Ovidio Guzman Lopez
Ovidio Guzman Lopez, also know as El Raton, Raton Nuevo or Ovid, is the son of Sinaloa Cartel leader Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán.[1]
Personal Life
Ovidio has three siblings: Joaquín Guzmán López, Iván Archivaldo and Jesús Alfredo.
The brothers are known collectively as Los Chapitos.
They gained control of their father's empire after his former right-hand man, Dámaso López Núñez, was extradited in 2018. It is believed that El Chapo may have up to thirteen children.[1]
While Ovidio's siblings come from El Chapo's first wife María Alejandrina Salazar Hernández, Ovidio's mother is Griselda López Pérez. Ovidio had three siblings on his mother's side—Grisella Guadalupe, Joaquin and Edgar Lopez who was shot dead.[1]
Capture and Release
Ovidio was indicted alongside his brother Joaquin Guzman Lopez for conspiracy to distribute cocaine, methamphetamine, and marijuana. On October 16th 2019, Ovidio was captured during a routine patrol inside a house located in the Tres Ríos. Ovidio's arrest was met with gunfire, burning barricades, armored vehicles and all forms of mayhem as members of the Sinaloa Cartel fought to free him. After a few hours of fighting the government decided to release him to curb the violence. Secretary of Public Security and Citizen Protection, Alfonso Durazo told CNBC:[2]
"The decision was taken to retreat from the house, without Guzman to try to avoid more violence in the area and preserve the lives of our personnel and recover calm in the city,"
