On Sunday February 11, 2018, Sears was killed in an apparent murder suicide by Daniel Spears in Evansville. ^{[9] [2]}

Daniel Sears was found dead in his SUV at the Vanderburgh County 4H Center after he allegedly shot and killed Maygen Sears and Richard Popp minutes apart. ^{[9] [2]}

Maygen Sears was reportedly shot first, while outside a building in the 700 block of East Franklin Street in Evansville.

A 911 caller in the 300 block of North Linwood Avenue, less than a block from where Maygen was found, reported shots fired at about 10:52 a.m. local time.

Days before her death, Maygen requested a restraining order against Daniel in January 2017, and was granted a temporary 30-day order pending a hearing. That order expired Monday, February 12, 2018, the day the couple was set to appear in court. ^{[9] [2] [0]}

Daniel Sears reportedly threatened to shoot and kill Maygen multiple times from January 4-11, 2018.

He specifically threatened to shoot her in the back if she did not return to their home, according to court documents.
