Mary Beth Haglin
Mary Beth Haglin
Mary Beth Haglin was born and raised in Alexandria, Minnesota. She graduated from Coe College he double majored in English and Spanish. she was awarded a Fullbright award to study in Bulgaria, but turned it down.
She began n 2015 substituting at Washington High School Washington High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She currently works as a waitress at Leonardo's Restaurant & Pizza in Cedar Rapids. She is originally from Alexandria, Minnesota.
Mary attended Coe College where she majored in English and Spanish, and earned a teaching endorsement in secondary education. She also received a scholarship from The Fulbright Program to serve in Bulgaria, but had to decline the opportunity.
Sexual Exploitation of a Minor
On July 23rd, 2016, Mary handed herself in to the local Sheriff after sexually exploiting a 17 year old student from the High School that she substituted for. Haglin, 24, and the student first had sex in October 2015 and began a relationship that lasted throughout the Academic year.
Mary blamed the school for the abuse:
“These people all knew what was going on, and yet they turned a blind eye because they wanted to protect their school.
They didn’t want it to get into the limelight,” saying she first had sex with the boy last October.
“They allowed this to happen.
They knew in February.
“They didn’t ban me,” and that “They never actually said they were banning me from school grounds, they never said they were banning me from working at any other school, they never said they were banning me from thus-and-so many feet of any school.
They never said any of that.”
The superintendent Brad Buck says the administrators at the high school heard the allegations about the relationship in February, and were determined to be unfounded.
Another investigation in May gave administrators reason enough to ask Haglin to leave due to a video leak of the couple dating in public earlier in April.
[1] Buck said he did not learn of the earlier allegations until Haglin’s removal in May.
Yet, Haglin believes that the school knew of the relationship she had with the teen since February, as it was the first time she and the teen were questioned about it by the administrators.
Despite the removal, no one in the district reported their suspicions to police, Buck said, though he did report Haglin’s conduct to the state Board of Educational Examiners in a May 26 letter.
After being removed from Washington, Haglin went on to teach at Harrison and Madison elementaries until classes ended there June 2.
Haglin says the district knew that she was there, and "there was no way they could not have known.
I am sure that they were tracking me and checking me," says Mary.
Someone allegedly reported the incident to Cedar Rapids police and they opened an investigation, not the district.
Haglin was arrested Friday on a warrant for sexual exploitation by a counselor, therapist or school employee.
She faces up to a two-year prison term and a decade on the sex offender registry.
In a statement after the arrest, district officials characterized her placement at the elementary schools as “a miscommunication.” It was the responsibility of the district’s Human Resources Department to ask the AEA to remove Haglin from the database, district officials said. School board documents show the human resources director, Jill Cirivello, retired June 30 at age 56.
The SubCentral agency, used by teachers to be placed in schools as substitutes, did not know about Haglin's conduct, and were never issued any means of communication about the matter from the Ceder Rapids district until June 14th - a month after Haglin was removed.
[1] According to the district, on May 18th, they did ask SubCentral to remove Haglin from Washington High School, but no further action was communicated.
Many colleges and schools use SubCentral to hire substitute teachers.
Haglin said that she continue having access to the SubCentral database the same way she had before.
After being dismissed, she went on to teach at Harrison Elementary, Oak Ridge, and Prairie Creek Intermidiate until June 2.
She says: “They never actually said they were banning me from school grounds, they never said they were banning me from working at any other school, they never said they were banning me from thus-and-so many feet of any school."
Haglin has since been released from Linn County Jail after she posted bail and is due to face court next month accused of sexual exploitation of a minor.
She is no longer seeing the young guy, and admits that she is at fault, but believes that the school knew all along and never chose to take actions, presumably after the April video of her and the young teen was released.
Her next court date is August 12th.
Relation with Student
Haglin has declared that she was seduced by the student and would scribble little posted notes on her desk saying such things as, "I love you so much, my empress."
The student even compared the relationship to The Graduate, calling her "Mrs. Robinson". She says that she was "head over heels", but that she now realizes, "how stupid I was."
They had a relationship that lasted about six months, and they would have sex nearly everyday inside her car near a public park.
They were discovered by another student.
She says she wants to go back and smack herself, saying: "what were you thinking Mary Beth?".
After the incident, Mary has lost her jobs as a teacher.
When she was fired she had trouble looking for a teaching position, and no one would hire her.
She was able to work at a pizza joint and clothing store, but ultimately lost those jobs too.
She now works as a stripper at a club called Woody's near Cedar Rapids, a few miles from the school that she used to teach.
Crime Watch Daily discovered her 18 year old lover attending the strip club Haglin works at and the two appeared to chat for an extended amount of time. She claims that her emotions are very confusing due to everything that has happened. In a video diary she reveals that she still loves him.
Haglin was sentenced to three months in jail and must register as a Sex offender.
She has to pay a fine of $625 and spend ten years on the sex offender registry.
